Backyard Kitchens Direct is a veteran-owned, family-run online store built around one focused category: outdoor kitchens, grills, griddles, and smokers. We serve homeowners across the contiguous United States who want their backyard to work as hard as the rest of the house.

We are a new store, and we are building it deliberately. That means a curated assortment instead of an endless catalog, honest product information instead of marketing filler, and real answers before you buy.

Who is behind it

The store is owned and run by James A. Brown Jr., who served 20 years in the U.S. Navy's submarine nuclear program and retired as a Chief Petty Officer, then spent the years after his service as a continuous-improvement consultant in regulated manufacturing. It is a family operation — James, his wife, and his daughters — with contracted help for content and customer service.

That background shapes how we work: careful documentation, accurate product information, and a clear process. We would rather tell you a product is not the right fit than sell you the wrong thing.
